Fundamental and Applied Problems of Mechanics

6–9 December 2022

Dear Colleague,

We invite you to participate in the international conference "Fundamental and Applied Problems of Mechanics (FAPM)". This year the conference as usual will be held at Bauman Moscow State Technical University both online and in-person.

The main purpose of this conference is to present research results in various areas of mechanics held in Russian and foreign scientific and educational institutions.

One of the important tasks of the FAPM conference is also the disclosure of links with the research of N.Ye. Zhukovsky and the presentation of the development of its results in modern conditions.

Since 2012, the Scientific and Educational Complex "Fundamental Sciences" and the BMSTU Department of Theoretical Mechanics named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky have been holding FAPM conferences welcoming scientists from leading institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences and universities of the Russian Federation, as well as foreign scientists working in various fields of mechanics.

Sessions will be held:

- in-person, in BMSTU rooms

- on-line, in Zoom

The scientific program includes reports on the following main areas:

• Mathematical simulation of mechanical systems, stability, oscillations, motion control

• Celestial mechanics and astrodynamics

• Applied mechanics

• Aero- and hydrodynamics

• Optimization and diagnostics of mechanical and hydromechanical systems

• History of mechanics

Historical background   (open)

The formation and development of the course "Theoretical Mechanics" and the department of the same name at the Imperial Moscow Technical School (IMTU) are the first notable actions of the great Russian scientist, "the father of Russian aviation" - Nikolai Yegorovich Zhukovsky in his ministry to the "mechanics" he loved, which he dedicated all of his life. This is one of the brightest pages of its activity, it is among the other major achievements of the great scientist, which he received in various fields of science and technology: aeromechanics and aircraft construction, hydromechanics, astronomy, mathematics, applied mechanics and many others. In the memoirs of collaborators and historical descriptions dedicated to N.E. Zhukovsky, scientific and methodological and pedagogical activities of his activities are presented very fragmentary and limited. At the same time, he himself considered his teaching work as the most important matter for engineering education in Russia.

In 1878, N.E. Zhukovsky began to read the course "Theoretical Mechanics" in IMTU as an independent, and not as part of the course of mathematics. Therefore, this year is considered the year of the foundation of the department "Theoretical Mechanics" in IMTU, the first in technical universities of Russia. The young teacher was at that time about thirty years old. A year later, from October 13, 1979, Associate Professor N.E. Zhukovsky is elected to the post of supernumerary professor at IMTU on this subject.

At that time, the concept of “department” did not indicate the organizational structure in an educational institution, but it highlighted the course being read from a number of other disciplines as a goal, subject area, research methods and curricula. For 43 years from 1878 to 1921, Nikolai Egorovich personally developed such curricu-la, lectured and conducted seminars.

Currently, professors and teachers of the department conduct classes in the disciplines "Theoretical Mechanics", "Applied Mechanics", "Theory of Oscillations", as well as special courses in other sections of mechanics. The number of students studying these fundamental engineering disciplines exceeds five thousand per academic year, and the number of lecture streams is over eighty. Training courses in mechanics for bachelors and specialists in Bauman Moscow State Technical University are the most voluminous compared to many other technical universities in Russia. This tradition of the fundamental nature of engineering education comes from the founder of the department, N.Ye. Zhukovsky, his colleagues and students who presented to the world the famous "Russian method of teaching crafts".

Participants of the international scientific conference "Fundamental and applied problems of mechanics”

One of the important tasks of the conferences “Fundamental and applied problems of mechanics” (FAPM), which are regularly held at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, is also the disclosure of links with the research of N.Ye. Zhukovsky and the presentation of the development of its results in modern conditions.

Paying tribute to the merits of the great scientist and the de-partment created by him in the preparation of highly qualified specialists, the Department of Theoretical Mechanics was named after its founder, Professor Nikolai Egorovich Zhukovsky.

Traditions laid by N.E. Zhukovsky in the department, continue to be maintained and developed. New young teachers, graduate students and students are connected to the scientific, pedagogical, methodical and social activities, which is the key to the further successful development of the department in modern conditions.
